We got to be part of something really cool at Bottineau Field Park in Northeast Minneapolis - a full basketball court paint job for Hennepin County. This wasn't a simple slap-of-color situation. The design called for bold, flowing shapes across the entire court surface in red, blue, yellow, green, and dark gray. Pulling that off cleanly on a large outdoor slab takes planning, patience, and the right materials.
Here's what the process actually looked like. We started with a base coat across the whole court - getting that foundation layer solid and even before any of the design work began. Then came the layering. Each color zone had to be mapped out and painted in the right sequence so the edges stayed clean and the colors didn't bleed into each other. The curved shapes you see aren't easy to execute at this scale. Every transition between colors had to be deliberate.
Outdoor court painting is a different animal than interior work. You're dealing with a textured, porous surface that soaks up paint differently than drywall or trim. The coating needs to bond well, hold up to heavy foot traffic, and resist the kind of weather punishment Minnesota dishes out across all four seasons. We used coatings built for exactly that - durable, UV-resistant, and tough enough to look good for years.
What we ended up with is a court that genuinely stands out. A space like this - right in the middle of a public park - gets used constantly. Kids, adults, pick-up games, events. When the surface looks sharp, it signals that the space is cared for. That matters for a community. It makes people want to show up and use it.
Projects like this are some of our favorites. They're visible, they're meaningful, and they push us to do detail work at a big scale. If you've got an outdoor court, athletic surface, or public space that needs new color and a durable finish, this is the kind of work we do.
